Writer Peter Ackroyd embarks on an exploration of Italy's floating city.
The journey takes Peter through some of the 118 islands embedded in the marshy lagoon that make up the historic city of Venice.
Peter strolls across some of the 400 bridges and rides gondolas through the waterways observing merchants on the Rialto, the mosaics of St Mark’s and the glass blowers of Murano.
He also studies the splendid art of some of Venice’s greats including Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo, whose passion for colour captures the unique vibrancy of the city.
